A front page article on HEB and its business plan is featured in this Sunday's Express News. This is an excellent introduction to our forthcoming HEB night Nov 8. Please read the article so you will be more familiar with the HEB strategy. Now WMT, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are expanding their offerings in SA, will they erode the HEB 50% market share?
I am also posting my essay on Blackboard on adding courses in Design to our curriculum here at TAMUSA.
Interestingly Fashion Week in San Antonio got its start at the new TAMUSA downtown TAMUSA Educational and Cutltureal Arts Center. Did you know that?
I lived in Corpus Christi when Furr's and The Box (owned at that time by a big European grocery giant) entered the market soon after Kroger's exited the market. The grocery wars were on, especially since Walmart had also started to enter the grocery business at the same time. This was a great time for consumers, $1 gallon of milk, 2/$1 bread, .50 cent 2-liters of Coke, and so on and so on. HEB has an array of defenses at its disposal, however I do not see a grocery war of old occurring. They will reign in (or be led into) promotions that will benefit consumers ( did you get your coupons in the mail last Saturday for free milk, pain reliever, chicken breast, pico, and others ...yes, I said free) however they are a company that knows how to compete and put up a good fight. I like HEB and look forward to rejoining their employment as I too like the grocery wars. They bring out the best in management.
