Chicago Teachers are going on strike for the first time since 1987. One of our themes at TMP is the existence of what we term a New Civil War. This one follows the same map as the War Between the States of 1861-65 and the Right to Work States and the Red Blue States. Basically new manufacturing has moved south and takes place in former 'backwaters' like Alabama and Mississippi.
But there are other dynamics as well. Apparently Rahm Emanuel, former Obama adviser, thought being Mayor of Chicago would be a positive for him. He is discovering just how difficult that job is.
We noted the last strike in Chicago in 1987 was on the eve of the 1987 stock market crash. The point is that a strike, as one union member notes, we will both be bloodied but you will learn not to do this to me again, represents negative social mood, it is a civil war. In the article Chicago government suggests citizens use the schools for their children as a last resort. For someone paying high property taxes in Chicago that is hardly assuance of a working government.
And this is hardly what Obama needs to showcase his brand of Chicago leadership. Here is an example of the simmering negative mood lagging the amarkets.
